Data centres are the basic infrastructure of the digital revolution, of the ecological transition and of the data society, as indicated by SpainDC, the Spanish Data Centre Association of which Elecnor is a member. The data centre sector in Spain has been experiencing significant growth due to the increase in data traffic, the increase in transactions, the development of teleworking, new forms of entertainment, social networks and digital platforms. It is also beginning to be observed that, in addition to all this, there is a new technological revolution that is generating a growing demand for processing capacity: Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The data centre sector as enablers of digital infrastructures is in a leading position at this turning point in the development of the digital economy and its performance is decisive for the development of digitisation, innovation and wealth creation. It can be stated: it is a well-known fact that the development of AI tools, and their use, are not possible without the development of data centres. Spain continues to grow as a destination for the construction of data centres, which is usually attributed to its strategic position to connect the technological infrastructure network with the rest of the world, the availability of land, renewable energy sources and the saturation of other markets.
